Narita is a sprawling three-terminal international gateway where domestic connections are limited since most Japanese domestic traffic now flows through Haneda. Connections are manageable but rarely fast, since terminals are far apart and each has its own independent security checkpoint that must be recleared. Immigration and customs formalities add extra time for any itinerary involving an international leg. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are linked by an underground moving walkway (about 10-15 minutes on foot), while Terminal 3 connects to Terminal 2 via a roughly 15-minute covered outdoor walkway used mainly by budget carrier passengers. A free inter-terminal shuttle bus loops between all three terminals every 10-15 minutes and is the more common option for T1-T3 transfers, though it adds waiting time; each terminal has its own security checkpoint, so switching terminals always means clearing security again.
