We recommend at least 55 minutes for a comfortable connection at Washington Dulles International. The minimum connection time is 45 minutes for domestic flights and 75 minutes for international flights. Transit between terminals takes up to 35 minutes.

Dulles is United's largest hub and a major international gateway, spread across a Main Terminal and four detached concourses linked by an airside AeroTrain. Connections are generally efficient for domestic-to-domestic transfers, but international arrivals face a real bottleneck at the Main Terminal's federal inspection facility, which can eat up a lot of buffer time. The AeroTrain is an airside underground train that connects the Main Terminal to Concourses A/B and C/D in about 5-8 minutes per leg, with no security re-screening required for onward transfers. Concourse Z, used for regional and some international flights, is only reachable by shuttle bus or mobile lounge from the Main Terminal, adding significant time; international arrivals must first clear immigration and customs at the Main Terminal before recheck, which is the single biggest time sink for connections.
