AUS is a compact, single-terminal airport where nearly all connections happen within one horseshoe-shaped concourse, making transfers straightforward compared to sprawling hubs. The airport was primarily built for origin-and-destination traffic rather than heavy connecting banks, so it can feel underprepared for tight connections despite its small footprint. International arrivals require a walk through Federal Inspection before rejoining the domestic side, which adds time not reflected in the terminal's compact size. All main connections occur via a single level walk through the central terminal corridor connecting the East and West concourses; there is no train or shuttle required. Passengers arriving internationally must clear Federal Inspection Services in the FIS facility before re-entering the sterile area, which adds a walk and a processing queue not needed for domestic-to-domestic transfers. The South Terminal, used by Frontier and a few low-cost carriers, is a separate landside building reached by a short shuttle bus ride and is not practical for tight connections.
